FAQ

Questions I get asked most

What is a VT operator?
I'm a VT (Video Tech) operator who runs the on-set playback rig during a film or TV shoot. I take the live feed from the camera, distribute it wirelessly to the director, DP, focus puller and 1st AD, record every take, and play it back instantly so the team can review what was just shot. On commercials and features it's a critical role; without a working VT, blocking-and-shooting big set pieces becomes guesswork.
What's the difference between a VT operator and a DIT?
I handle live on-set monitoring and playback in real time, so the director sees every take as it's shot. A DIT (Digital Imaging Technician) handles file management, dailies prep, and colour pipeline. They're complementary roles, and on most commercial shoots I pass clean takes directly to the DIT for further processing.
Do you work on TVCs and commercials?
Yes, TVC commercial work is a regular part of my calendar. I run a Qtake (4 cameras) playback rig purpose-built for the multi-camera, fast-turnaround style of commercial shoots. Day rate quoted on request via the contact form.
Do you work on feature films and TV series?
Yes. Credits include Boy Kills World (Lionsgate, 2024), The Crown (Netflix), Black Mirror (Netflix), One Piece (Netflix, 2025), Warrior (HBO Max), Devil's Peak (DStv), Deep State (MGM+), Average Joe (BET+), The Kissing Booth (Netflix) and Just Now Jeffrey (Bioscope, 2024). Long-form schedules are my bread and butter.
Where in South Africa are you based, and do you travel?
Based in Milnerton, Cape Town, I cover the entire Western Cape as standard. Shoots further afield, including the Garden Route, Johannesburg, and cross-border to Namibia, Zimbabwe or Botswana, are quoted with travel and per-diems separately. I'm also open to international shoots, with travel and per-diems quoted on enquiry.
What VT equipment do you bring?
Sound Devices Pix recorders (Pix E7, Pix240I, two Pix240 units), a Qtake (4 cameras) playback rig, Teradek Bolt 6 LT wireless video with extra receivers for focus puller and director, a Teradek 3000 system and Sidekick, and a full monitor stack: Swit 23.7", Sony A170 and SmallHD Indie 7 handhelds. Full inventory and gear day rates listed on the home page.
Can I hire just the gear without the operator?
Yes, gear can be hired separately at the published day rates. I'd usually recommend hiring the kit with me as operator (the rig is set up and tuned around my workflow), but standalone gear hire is available on request.
What's your day rate?
My day rate is quoted on request. Long-form (series, features), TVC / commercial day, half-day, and weekly bookings each have their own rate. Email [email protected] with your shoot dates and brief; I'll reply within 24 hours.
How quickly can you reply to a booking enquiry?
Within 24 hours on briefs received by email or WhatsApp. For urgent same-day enquiries, WhatsApp +27 71 391 3001 directly.
Do you have backup equipment in case something fails?
Yes. Redundancy is built into the cart across recorders, wireless TX/RX and monitors. A signal failure on a long-take feature can cost five figures. I plan for it.
